Many learners can read the Quran but don't understand what they are reading. The good news is that you don't need to learn all of Arabic to start understanding. A small number of words appear again and again on almost every page. If you learn them first, you will start recognising meaning much faster.
This guide gives you the most common Quran words in simple groups, with meanings and examples, and a plan to learn them.
Why start with common words?
The Quran uses some words constantly — little words like "from", "in" and "who", and key words like "Lord", "said" and "believed". Learning these first gives you the most understanding for the least effort. Sites like the Quranic Arabic Corpus let you see how often each word appears.

Use roots to learn faster
Most Arabic words come from a root of three letters. Once you know the root, you can guess many related words. For example, the root ك ت ب (k-t-b) is about writing:
- كَتَبَ — he wrote
- كِتَاب — book
- مَكْتُوب — written
And the root ع ل م (‘-l-m) is about knowing:
- عَلِمَ — he knew
- عِلْم — knowledge
- عَلِيم — All-Knowing
- الْعَالَمِين — the worlds
A simple 30-day plan
- Week 1: learn Group 1 (small words). Look for them in Al-Fatiha and the last ten surahs.
- Week 2: learn Group 2 and Group 3.
- Week 3: learn Group 4 (verbs).
- Week 4: read Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls with a word-by-word translation, and count how many words you recognise.
Spend just 10 minutes a day. Write each word on a card, with the Arabic on one side and the meaning on the other, and review the cards the next day.
Understanding and tajweed go together
Understanding the words also helps your recitation. When you know where a sentence ends, you know where to stop, and your reading sounds more natural.
