Some of the most beautiful du‘as are the ones Allah taught us in the Quran itself. Many begin with رَبَّنَا (Rabbana, "Our Lord") or رَبِّ (Rabbi, "My Lord"). Because they are verses of the Quran, it is worth reciting them correctly. Here are 12 well-known Quranic du‘as, each with its meaning, its reference and a short tajweed tip.
12 du‘as from the Quran
1. For good in this life and the next
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ — Al-Baqarah 2:201 Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
- Tajweed: حَسَنَةً وَفِي — tanween before waw merges with ghunnah: hasanatan-wa becomes hasanataw-wa. النَّارِ has a ghunnah on the noon.
2. For acceptance of our deeds
2:127 Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
- Tajweed: ghunnah on مِنَّا and إِنَّكَ; the noon in أَنتَ is hidden (ikhfa).
3. For patience and firmness
رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ — 2:250 Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our steps firm and help us against the disbelieving people.
- Tajweed: light qalqalah on the ب of صَبْرًا and the ق of أَقْدَامَنَا; heavy ikhfa in وَانصُرْنَا.
4. For forgiveness of mistakes
2:286 Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake.
- Tajweed: إِن نَّسِينَا — noon into noon with ghunnah. See our full guide to the last two verses of Al-Baqarah.
5. For a firm heart
رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً ۚ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْوَهَّابُ — Al ‘Imran 3:8 Our Lord, do not let our hearts swerve after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself. You are the Giver.
- Tajweed: مِن لَّدُنكَ — the noon merges into lam with no ghunnah; then the noon in لَّدُنكَ is hidden before ك.
6. The du‘a of Adam and Hawwa
رَبَّنَا ظَلَمْنَا أَنفُسَنَا وَإِن لَّمْ تَغْفِرْ لَنَا وَتَرْحَمْنَا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ — Al-A‘raf 7:23 Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers.
- Tajweed: heavy ظ in ظَلَمْنَا; ikhfa in أَنفُسَنَا; وَإِن لَّمْ merges with no ghunnah.
7. For parents and all believers
Ibrahim 14:41 Our Lord, forgive me, my parents and the believers on the Day the reckoning is established.
- Tajweed: in اغْفِرْ لِي, the ra is read clearly — in Hafs it does not merge into the lam.
8. For a righteous family
رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا — Al-Furqan 25:74 Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and children the coolness of our eyes, and make us leaders of the righteous.
- Tajweed: مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا — the noon is clear before hamza (izhar); أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا — tanween merges into waw with ghunnah.
9. For the believers who came before us
رَبَّنَا اغْفِرْ لَنَا وَلِإِخْوَانِنَا الَّذِينَ سَبَقُونَا بِالْإِيمَانِ وَلَا تَجْعَلْ فِي قُلُوبِنَا غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا رَبَّنَا إِنَّكَ رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ — Al-Hashr 59:10 Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who came before us in faith, and put no hatred in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Kind and Merciful.
- Tajweed: غِلًّا لِّلَّذِينَ and رَءُوفٌ رَّحِيمٌ — tanween merges with no ghunnah.
10. For more knowledge
Ta-Ha 20:114 My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
- Tajweed: light qalqalah on the د of زِدْنِي; when you stop, عِلْمًا ends with a long a: ‘ilma.
11. For parents' mercy
Al-Isra 17:24 My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.
- Tajweed: ارْحَمْهُمَا — when you start on it, the ra is heavy (the kasra before it is only the temporary kasra of a starting hamza). Deep ح.
12. The du‘a of Yunus
Al-Anbiya 21:87 There is no god but You. Glory be to You. I was among the wrongdoers.
- Tajweed: madd munfasil in لَّا إِلَٰهَ (4–5 counts); ikhfa in أَنتَ and كُنتُ; ghunnah in إِنِّي.
Reciting du‘as with tajweed
These du‘as are verses of the Quran, so saying them with correct letters and tajweed is a good habit — especially when you recite them in prayer or teach them to your children.
For the rules mentioned above, see idgham, ikhfa, qalqalah and heavy and light letters, or keep the free printable tajweed chart beside you. To learn with a teacher, see our Quran classes for adults.
