Surah Al-‘Asr (chapter 103) has only three verses, yet it holds a complete plan for a successful life. Many Muslims recite it in almost every prayer. This guide explains its meaning and the four qualities it describes.
The surah
Surah Al-‘Asr 103:1–3
By time! Surely mankind is in loss — except those who believe, do good deeds, urge one another to the truth, and urge one another to patience.
Verse by verse
1. "By time" — وَالْعَصْرِ
Allah swears by al-‘asr. Scholars explain it as time itself, or the late afternoon, or the era. Swearing by time draws our attention to it: our life is made of time, and every moment that passes cannot come back.
2. "Surely mankind is in loss" — إِنَّ الْإِنسَانَ لَفِي خُسْرٍ
Every human being is losing, as their time runs out — unless they use it well. The verse uses strong emphasis (inna and la-) to make the point certain.
3. "Except those who…" — the four qualities
The only people saved from loss are those who have all four qualities:
Quality | Arabic | What it means |
|---|---|---|
1. Faith | آمَنُوا | Belief in Allah, His messengers and the Last Day |
2. Good deeds | وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ | Faith that shows in actions: prayer, kindness, honesty |
3. Urging truth | وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْحَقِّ | Encouraging each other towards what is right |
4. Urging patience | وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ | Encouraging each other to stay firm in hardship and obedience |
The first two are about yourself. The last two are about others — a believer cares that the people around them succeed too.
"If people reflected on this surah…"
Imam al-Shafi‘i is reported to have said that if people reflected deeply on this surah, it would be enough for them. Scholars explain that it contains the whole path: knowledge and faith, action, calling others to good, and patience along the way.
Lessons for daily life
- Value your time. Every day is a part of your life that will not return.
- Faith needs action. Belief and good deeds come together throughout the Quran.
- Success is shared. Encourage your family and friends towards good — gently.
- Patience is part of the plan. Doing good, and staying away from wrong, needs patience.
Reciting it correctly
Al-‘Asr has several tajweed points: the heavy ra when stopping on al-‘asr and khusr, the ghunnah in inna, and the qalqalah in bis-sabr. See our verse-by-verse guide to Al-‘Asr, Al-Kawthar and An-Nasr with tajweed. For more short surahs explained, read the meaning of the last 10 surahs and Surah Al-Ikhlas.
