Surah Al-Ikhlas (chapter 112) is one of the shortest surahs in the Quran — only four verses — yet it describes Allah more clearly than many long books. It is usually one of the first surahs a Muslim learns, and we recite it in prayer, before sleep and for protection. This guide explains its meaning verse by verse and its special virtues.
The surah
Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1–4
Say: He is Allah, the One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.
Why is it called "Al-Ikhlas"?
Ikhlas means sincerity or purity. The surah purifies our belief in Allah from anything that does not befit Him, and the one who believes in it sincerely is "pure" in his faith. It is also called Surat al-Tawhid, the surah of Allah's Oneness.
Meaning, verse by verse
Verse | Key word | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ | أَحَد (Ahad) | Allah is One — unique, with no partner and nothing like Him |
اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ | الصَّمَد (as-Samad) | The One everyone turns to in need, while He needs no one |
لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ | lam yalid wa lam yulad | He has no children and no parents; He has no beginning and no end |
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌ | كُفُوًا (kufuwan) | Nothing and no one is equal or comparable to Him |
Why was it revealed?
According to a report in al-Tirmidhi, some of the polytheists asked the Prophet ﷺ to tell them the lineage of his Lord. Allah revealed this surah as the answer: Allah is One, needs no one, has no family line, and has no equal.
Its virtues
- Equal to one third of the Quran. The Prophet ﷺ said that Surah Al-Ikhlas is equal to a third of the Quran (reported by al-Bukhari). Scholars explain that the Quran's themes include beliefs about Allah, rulings and stories — and this surah gathers the core of the first.
- Loving it is loved by Allah. A companion who led prayer used to finish every recitation with Al-Ikhlas because, he said, it describes the Most Merciful and he loved to recite it. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Tell him that Allah loves him" (reported by al-Bukhari).
- Part of the daily protection. The Prophet ﷺ used to recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas before sleeping (reported by al-Bukhari).
Reciting it correctly
Because we recite it so often, it is worth getting the tajweed right: the qalqalah on the dal at the end of each verse, the heavy lam in Allah, and the merging in yakul-lahu. Our verse-by-verse guide to reciting the three Quls with tajweed covers every rule.
